The product caused an illegal operation on COMCTL32.DLL.

This article applies to: BlackICE Defender.

SUMMARY

Release 1.8.5.5 has issues working with version 5.x of COMCTL32.DLL. It will terminate abruptly with an error message saying that it has caused an illegal operation on COMCTL32.DLL.

DETAILS

Release 1.8.5.5 will sometimes terminate abruptly if your computer is running version 5.x of COMCTL32.DLL and you perform the following:

1. Double-click on an attack or intruder entry 2. Restore the Defender icon

Note that the error will not occur 100% of the time; sometimes double- clicking on an attack or intruder will work, and when it does occur, it will not impede the attack detection and protection capabilities of our product. This means that while the graphical interface has terminated, any attacks that occur will not go unnoticed by our intrusion defense agent; and at the same time, the same agent continues to protect your computer.

If you are experiencing this issue, there is a work-around that will minimize its occurrence. If you click the Attacks or Intruders tab instead double-clicking the individual attack or intruder, you will not see this problem occur. The only time you may see it is when you are re-opening the interface from its iconized state.

This issue may also be resolved by upgrading to the latest version of BlackICE. For more information on the upgrade process, please see KB article q000011.
