Installation of the product on other drives than C: doesn't work on WinNT.

This article applies to: BlackICE Defender.

SUMMARY

Most customers do not have a problem with this. However, a small number of customers are reporting that the service will not start when running from drives other than C:.

DETAILS

Our own internal tests show no problems. We test with both FAT and NTFS, including weird combinations such as NTFS striping.

We therefore conclude that there is something specific in these customer installations that we are unable to reproduce in house.

Workaround

The only solution to this problem right now is to re-install on the C: drive should you find a problem starting the service on the D: drive.

Error Message

The error messages that might be seen are:

Could not start the BlackICE service on //computername Error 0193: %1 not a valid Window NT application.

or:

Could not start the BlackICE service on //computername. Error 0005 Access is denied.

Status

We are working with several customers trying to pin down the problem. This page will be updated when more information is discovered, either with a fix or information as to what is causing the problem.
