Is there a way to automatically send a message back to the originating IP address and tell them to buzz off?

This article applies to: BlackICE Defender.

SUMMARY

No.

DETAILS

You probably do not want this feature.

One of the main features of the product is the "firewall" filtering. When the hacker probes your system, they can get three possible responses: yes, no, and nothing. A yes answer indicates that your machine has the vulnerability they are looking for. A no answer means your machine isn't vulnerable, but your machine does exist. A nothing means that hacker gets no response at all, and as far as the hacker can tell, your machine does not exist. The firewalling functionality blocks the attacks and makes your machine appear as if it isn't on the network.

Technology

From a technology perspective, creating this feature is very difficult to near impossible. For example, you cannot get the e-mail address of somebody given their IP address (otherwise, spammer's would be using the technique to get your e-mail address).

There are some limited cases where such things can be done, such as when you are on an IRC chat room. We are looking into some interesting approaches.
