E-commerce sites use several different credit-card validation
services. When you enter your card, the e-commerce site
sends your information to the validation service, which
then validates it. Different services use different techniques,
so it is quite possible that one site might accept
your card, whereas another might reject it. Ultimately
this is for your protection (though it is probably frustrating
you right now), because it makes it hard for people to steal
credit card numbers and use them on the Internet.
