Microsoft "File and Print Sharing" can be installed in either a
"local" mode or a "global" mode. In the "global" mode, anybody
anywhere on the Internet can access your machine. Upon installation,
the product immediately blocks access to this.
The best solution is to reinstall the option in "local" mode by unbinding
from the TCP/IP stack and rebinding to the NetBEUI stack. A good
website that explains this is the "ShieldsUp!" site at http://grc.com.
Another solution is to "trust" your internal machines to allow
them to bypass the blocking setup by the product. This is described
in article q000051.
You can also go to the Protection configuration screen
and re-enable "Internet file sharing". This is not recommended, though.
If you've shared disks with no passwords, there is nothing
the product can do to stop anybody in the world from accessing
that share. However, if you enable passwords on that share,
the product will warn you of people trying to break in.
